NGS Open Days
We are one of very few allotment sites listed in the National Gardens Scheme’s famous ‘Yellow Book’. We host an annual Open Day on the first Sunday in September to benefit the charity.
As well opening access to the main avenues, we encourage our members to ‘open’ their plots for the public to walk on to, and we have recruited many new members from these occasions. Plant, produce and refreshments sales provide an additional attraction and are a major source of income for the LLAA.
Plant Sales
In addition to the NGS Open Day, we hold a public plant sale every May. There is always a wide variety of vegetable and ornamental plants on offer. Check the bottom of this page for details of forthcoming events.
Other Events
As well as the open days, the LLAA raises its profile through attendance at other related events. In the past we have had stalls at the Locko Park Gardening Event in May and the biennial Derby Eco-Fest.
Competitions and shows
We usually enter the ‘Derby in Bloom’ annual competition as a whole site, and encourage individuals to enter their plots or produce as well. Judging for this is usually done in early July, so we post reminders around that time for a general spruce up! We won this event in 2006, and hope to reclaim our past glories again soon.
We have also had successes at national level in recent years with competitions run by Kitchen Garden magazine, and Gardening News. When entry details are published we post them on the site notice boards and on the News page of the website for those interested in entering.
We hold our own annual produce competition during the NGS open day and encourage all plot holders to enter. There are also several local produce shows to look out for in early September. Details and entry forms are usually posted onto the notice boards.

2012 Events
Come along to our Plant Sale in May (date to be confirmed soon) and find some great plants at bargain prices. There is usually a selection of Heritage varieties available. If you are a plot holder please plant a few extra seeds, or if you find you have surplus plants in May, please donate them to the sale.
NGS Open Day and LLAA Annual Show: Sunday 2 September, 11am – 5pm
The National Gardens Scheme Open Day will be the first Sunday in September, which includes our Annual Show. The allotment site will be open for the public to explore and many individual plots also welcome people to come and take a closer look.
